The 部门 of Mathematical and Physical 科学 (MAPS) is the largest division on campus, consisting of the departments of Chemistry, 数学, Physics and Computer Science, and the Dual Degree Engineering Program. It offers many programs of study, 研究 opportunities, professional training 和服务-learning activities, and provides a pathway for students towards successful scientific and health-profession careers (in medicine, 药店, 数学, 计算机科学, 物理, 生物化学, 和化学). With over 50 faculty members and 700 students, MAPS students can always count on faculty and peer mentoring and support. All departments in the 部门 are located in close proximity in the Norman C. In recognition of his contributions to education and social justice, Dr. 雷诺Verret, President of Xavier University of Louisiana, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Portland during its 2024 undergraduate commencement ceremony on Sunday, 5月5日. President Verret took the helm of Xavier in 2015 after a unanimous election by the university’s Board of Trustees and is preparing to lead the nation’s only historically Black and Catholic institution into its next century of service following the celebration of its historic centennial in 2025. 自从他当选以来, President Verret has championed the university’s mission of promoting a more just and humane society through education, 研究, 和服务. On the cusp of celebrating its centennial in 2025, Xavier proudly welcomes Ms. 黛博拉·H. Telman J.D., as the keynote speaker for the 2025 graduates of the CAS 研究生课程 and COP during the university’s 97th commencement. Ms. Telman, a visionary advocate for health equity, currently serves as Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and General Counsel with Gilead 科学, 公司., a global bio-药店 company and a frequent partner of Xavier in initiatives to improve health outcomes for the underserved.
